Heart palpitations are the sensation of having a fluttering, pounding heart. It can feel like your heart is skipping beats or just beating far too fast. It’s commonly caused by stress (like a first date or a job interview), exercise, or caffeine. Though it can be harmless for a short amount of time, it can sometimes be a symptom of a medical condition that requires treatment.
If your heart palpitations are short and infrequent, you don’t usually need to seek your doctor’s opinion. If it becomes frequent, prolonged or if you have a history of heart disease, you should see your doctor. They can conduct tests and monitor your heart to ensure it’s not a more serious problem. They’ll usually start with an EKG, which checks the electrical activity of your heart. You also might be given a small heart monitor to wear under your clothes for a couple days to find out what’s happening throughout the day.
It’s important to get medical help ASAP if you have any of the following symptoms alongside heart palpitations:
• Chest, back or abdominal pain
• Shortness of breath
You’re more likely to get heart palpitations if you’re really stressed, have an anxiety disorder, or are pregnant. They can also arise if you’re taking medications that contain stimulants, which are in some cold and asthma meds. Caffeine is a very common culprit and cutting back can help.
